National Energy Policies & Deregulation in the EU by Sophia Barkat Germany recently shut down the first of its 19 nuclear reactors (link). The operator E. ON said it would have shut the reactor down due to financial reasons whether the government ordered it or not, though the Government did order it. The reactors were old and expensive to operate at a time when utilities deregulation across the EU will open up national utilities to steep competition. Companies distributing power in Germany can now get energy from anywhere in the EU. Local power delivery companies can now buy power from anywhere in Europe, and power companies -- state-run as well as private -- that can't meet the competition will be wiped out. |
