Abortion: a Republican Value?

by F. David Shelene

They Won

After hearing my Republican friends boast about President Bush’s so called "over-whelming victory", it occurred to me that maybe I should congratulate them. First, let me just say they need to inform Americans of all the facts, not just the ones they want us to know.  Bush fans, talk-radio and many in the media have been bloating that Bush received more votes than any other President in U.S. history.  That fact is true. The rest of the story is that John Kerry also received more votes than any President in U.S. history.  Kerry even received more votes than Ronald Reagan. Bush won by a small margin, not a huge landslide, as some would have you believe.

I wish to congratulate the Republicans though on running a great though sullied campaign.  They’ve managed to take a decorated war hero and turned him into a villain.  They’ve taken the first President in U.S history with a criminal record, someone who didn’t go to Nam and didn’t even show up for duty every time he should have, and turned him into a hero. They’ve succeeded in convincing the majority of voters, a man who was shot at and wounded more than once couldn’t lead our country’s military in the fight against terrorism.  Yet a man who has never commanded anyone in battle or even been shot at himself is a great military commander.

How they Did it

The Bush bunch has spent more money than any administration in history.  They’ve turned a balanced budget with a huge surplus into an unbalanced budget with a huge debt. President Bush has not vetoed a single spending bill in four years, yet they’ve managed to convince most voters that the Democrats are the "tax and spend" party.  Amazing job! They’ve turned those of us who want health care for all Americans, even those who can’t afford it, into socialists. They’ve turned we who call for shelter and food for the poor and homeless into "bleeding heart liberals". Yet they’ve turned a man who has backed those who make health care unaffordable to many, (big drug and insurance companies) into a "conservative caring person". They have convinced most of America that these "Brutal Dictators" must be taken down.  Yet brainwashed most, that China, who machine-gunned their own people wanting Democracy, should be granted "most favored nation trade status, and North Korea, who threatened to nuke us if we stepped on their land, could be handled with diplomacy.

The Republicans proselytized voters when they said John Kerry flip-flopped on issues. The Kerry statement, "I did vote for the 87 billion dollars, before I voted against it", was used over and over again in ads on TV. The campaign brilliantly omitted that Kerry and everyone else who voted to support the war were basing their opinions on faulty intelligence supplied by the White House.  When it became apparent there were no weapons of mass destruction, and that much of the money was being funneled to Halliburton without a bid, many supporters including Kerry demanded more accountability before giving their stamp of approval.  Halliburton is now under Federal investigation.

Abortion – a Republican Value?

Perhaps best of all, they’ve assimilated millions of Americans into their hypocrisy on the emotional issues.  Everyone I have spoken with who voted for GWB voted on the issues of abortion, gay rights and guns.  These are very important issues.  Mirroring the previous four years, the Republicans again control the House, Senate, Supreme Court, and the Executive Branch of our Government.  In reality keeping with their hidden agenda, the next four years will look much the same as the last four years.  After this term is over, abortion will still be legal.

Another one of those important little tid-bits they left out is Republican appointed Justices gave us "Roe v Wade" and upheld it since. Five of the seven Justices that voted to make abortion legal were Republican appointees:

Warren E. Burger was appointed to the court by Republican President Richard Nixon in 1969 to replace Earl Warren as chief justice. Despite being a so-called conservative. Burger voted to legalize abortion.

William Brennan was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1956 by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Brennan voted to legalize abortion.

Lewis F. Powell Jr. joined the court in 1971 after being appointed by Republican President Richard Nixon. Powell voted to legalize abortion.

Potter Stewart joined the court in 1959 after being nominated by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Stewart voted to legalize abortion.

Harry A. Blackmun, appointed by Republican President Nixon in 1970, authored the Supreme Court's majority opinion in the Roe vs. Wade decision, basing the opinion on the constitutional right to privacy. Blackman voted to legalize abortion.

Thurgood Marshall was appointed a justice by Democrat President Lyndon Johnson in 1967. He voted to legalize abortion. William O. Douglas was appointed in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Marshall voted to legalize abortion.

William O. Douglas, appointed in 1939 by Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt, voted to legalize abortion.

The only two dissenting votes were Justices William H. Rehnquist and Byron White. Rehnquist was appointed by Republican President Nixon and White by Democrat President Kennedy in 1962.

Since then, in a more modern case, "Casey vs. Planned Parenthood", the Supreme Court upheld abortion rights with a Five to four vote with the majority again being Republican appointed Justices. A Democrat appointee, Justice White along with the other dissenting Justices stated, "that a woman's decision to abort her unborn child is not a constitutionally protected "liberty" because the Constitution says absolutely nothing about it.

Yes, you have to hand it to them.  They ran a ingenious campaign.

Looking ahead or behind

In 2008, after all the pre-election talk of a Constitutional amendment against gay marriage, gay rights will still be an issue.  The Republicans will once again be touting the same old tried and true vote getting rhetoric, convincing the same gullible, well-meaning crowd that they should vote for them, because they are against abortion, and gays.

Plus don’t forget, ‘those mean old Democrats just want to take your guns.’

Watch and see.
