US Elections

From Left Field: So why Kerry?

by Eric A. Smith

"Whoever controls the flow of Persian Gulf oil has a stranglehold not only on our economy but also on the other countries of the world as well."-- DICK Cheney

About eight months back a pal asked who I would support in 2004; I said Kerry, possibly teamed with Clark, would have been the most electable. Kerry and Edwards is certainly also a strong ticket.

Kerry is by no means my first choice -- he's for continuing the conflict in Iraq, after all.
BUT, the "flip-flop" label is just another no-substance label from the extreme right; their typical tactic is to fling nastiness at opponents and just see what will stick, even if it's unsubstantiated rumor (for excellent examples, look back at the falsely attributed misquote "I invented the Internet" they claimed Al Gore said, or the "murder spree" of the Clintons. They're not even against eating their own, as Karl Rove's appallingly nasty "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" telephone campaign on Bush's behalf will attest).

Having said that, Kerry stands for several things America desperately needs in this era of corporate behemoths running amok: unions and labor protection laws, universally accessible healthcare, minority and women's rights, environmental protection, etc.

But of absolute paramount importance, is that, if Kerry wins, the ruination of democracy by paperless e-voting will have been averted. If Bush wins, it is guaranteed that HAVA will be strengthened, DREs will be forced upon the American electorate and verifiable elections wll have been made a permanent impossibility.

And that means that those in power can never be voted out!

And with nothing to oppose them and their agenda, whoever has seized power through an electronic coup need never answer to anyone. They will have disengaged themselves completely from having to implement the will of the people -- after all, if they can't be voted out, who cares what the citizens of America want:

Raw nuclear waste dumped in prime agriculture land? If it's good for Duke Power, bring that shit on!

Oil drilling in protected migratory land? If Enron wants it, dig those motherfucking holes! Fuck the dead moose!

Cheaper wages for American factory workers? If Nike wants it, shake their goddamn wallets empty!

Better yet, pay some illiterate 12-year-old starvee in Bangladesh five bucks a week to stitch $100-a-pair trainers for twelve backbreaking hours! Hell, let's do away with wages altogether and beat them into working!

Somebody wants to protest their grandmother's social security being plundered? Fuck that; lock the hippy motherfuckers up! If they demand their Constitutional rights, break their noses and mace them! If they still won't shut up, declare them "terrorists" and disappear them in an internment camp!

If it weren't for the growing base of DREs and the complete GOP control and ownership of them, I'd say it was no big deal if Monkeyboy Bush landed a second term. Eventually he and his neoNazis would fuck things up to the point that even their own families would vote to kick their asses out; but the electronic vote fix is definitely in the works, and no matter what side of the political fence you sit on, it spells imminent disaster of the highest order for America.

You want to know my druthers? If he had a snowball's chance of winning, I'd give my vote to Kucinich in a heartbeat. A Kucinich-Dean ticket would literally save America from the imminent impending economic, enviornmental and civic meltdown we will all see within two to three decades.

The tremendous, appalling, unnecessary waste; the flagrant, obscene war profiteering and the rampant Capitol Hill corporate whoredom, if not reversed soon, will spell America's unravelling. The best we can hope for, if our present course is not averted, is totalitarian stabiliy; the worst is a smoking, toxic wasteland overrun by ganglords. Or perhaps the annihilation of the human race -- it's certainly within reach, and Bush's greatest power base, the Evangelicals, are quite publicly and unabashedly both praying for and trying to engineer it.

Don't believe me? Have a gander at the reference section. If my links don't convince you, I heartily encourage you to do a little googling on the "evangelicals" yourself. This shit is too scary and crazy to even make up. This is who is on the brink of gaining permanent control of our country -- and its nuclear arsenal. If that isn't reason enough to vote for Kerry instead of Bush -- I certainly can't think of one.
