Propaganda is Propaganda

by Ron Jackson

The President who said we have nothing to fear but fear itself obviously had never seen the movie Fahrenheit 911 or been subjected to the Homeland Security Advisory System. Propaganda is propaganda, and we have a lot to fear from both parties as we get closer to the presidential election. The Democrats have Fahrenheit 911, and the Republicans have the terror alert system.

The movie didn’t divulge anything that informed Americans didn’t already know. To those who may have been too busy the past three plus years doing other things besides reading news, the movie may have been eye and mind opening.  It wasn’t the least bit shocking unless you get all your news from Fauxnews.

The terror alert system with almost every color in rainbow sherbet is the Republican’s propaganda machine. It changes from red to yellow arbitrarily. There are never any substantiated reasons for the changes. It seems someone in the department gets a hair up the butt, and the system alert changes like the mood rings from the 1960s.

If the Democratic candidate gains a few points in popularity, or if we get within a few days of a national holiday or a semi-annual department store sale, the alert system goes from elevated to high. Take note of the direct correlation in the alert level and the latest unemployment reports. If unemployment rises, so could the terror alert. The alert system is a very valuable tool to have when the American troop death rate climbs. A high terror alert justifies the deaths.

Whenever asked for specifics for the cause of heightened measures, the Homeland Security folks never give any. They tout some silly explanation about sources. Probably the same sources that told us Iraq was producing weapons of mass destruction and that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden were co-captains of their high school soccer team.

If the government could produce an alert system that would warn the Border Patrol Agency whenever illegal immigrants were crossing the borders of our southwestern states, now that would be something special, as would a system that would at least warn those states’ driver’s license bureaus to expect an increase in driver’s license testing.

Instead of an alert system that changes like the weather, why not just say we should always be on alert? The government has already said this terrorist thing is the way of the future. Like taxes, toll ways, and high gasoline prices, now that we have accepted it, terrorism in the U. S. is never going away. The good old days of having only our government to fear are long gone.

Be it Michael Moore or the terror alert system, propaganda works. Only Moore gave people a choice to vote with their dollars, and he produced tangible sources, his video tapes. The government’s alert system subjects the whole country at will to its tactic but offers no legitimate sources while preying on the fears of the masses.

The Homeland Security Department is a Republican invention and gives the GOP an unfair upper hand.  By election week in November, Fahrenheit 911 will have been relegated to the 7-day rental bin. George Bush, the self-proclaimed war president, can put the fear of bin Laden in all registered voters right before they cast their votes, just by raising the terror alert level.

There should be a moratorium on propaganda that would prevent within 60 days of a national election any terror level change and wouldn’t allow Michael Moore to re-release his movie during that same period. Imagine that! The whole voting population would be forced to vote the old fashioned way, by using their own reasoning to make a choice.
