US Elections
Why The Republican Convention's Platform for re-election is Null and Void by Eric M Hoover "September 11" -- "Lock-Box" of the Republican Convention The Republican Convention was held during the last week of August in New York City. With the War in Iraq no longer a strong rallying point for the Republican party, President Bush and others, namely, Mayor Gulliani, Dick Cheney, Governor Schwarzeneggar -- all used September 11th, 2001 and the fear of imminent terror attacks as the promiment platform for the convention. President Bush used September 11th as a reference point for his four year Presidency, with no other crowning moment to focus on and a few empty promises about the future, as in his last election campaign. The Republicans were not alone. They even got a Democrat from West Virginia, Zell Miller, to speak out against his own party for not supporting the President enough. But how can September 11 become an issue that separates America? It is as though it were an issue like the Iraq War or Abortion or Social Security that people have different opinions on. Do Democrats endorse September 11? How about Nader fans? How did a horrible memory become the platform for an election? It was not unexpected, though. Prior to the Convention, images of September 11 were being used in Bush campaign ads, and Bush himself refers to the event in almost every speech while on the road. And during a rally in Iowa on September 7, 2004, Vice-President Dick Cheney told those in attendance that "a vote for John Kerry would equal a vote for terrorism". He insisted Kerry would follow a pre-9/11 defense policy, calling it a "pre-9/11 mind-set," leaving America open for more attacks. They even managed to make Bush deliver an articulate speech, which really does not excuse the fact that he is using a national tragedy, for which he assumes no responsibilty, as a platform to get him re-elected. Here's why: How About "Not on My Watch" ? Schwarzeneggar's "Don't Be An Economic Girlie Man" quote seemed to get the Republicans all excited at the Convention. But, how about "Not on my watch?" Since March 2004, ads for the incumbent President featuring the skeletal remains of the World Trade Center have aired in 18 states in the U.S. The American Fire-fighters Association, forgetful of who was President at the time the tragedy happened, even ran ads to endorse him and stood by Bush at the Convention. Though Bush has been effective at winning the hearts of some people, no one should forget he was President and Commander-in-Chief at the time the nation was attacked. What had he been doing prior to 911? Had Condoleeza Rice, who so effectively blamed the FBI and the CIA The ads have angered the families of 9/11 survivors and other Americans, who have use the terms "sick" and "political propaganda" to describe the ads. Bush advisors claim the ads are a "reminder of our shared experience as a nation." Bush himself claims to be a War President. But what has he done to avenge the murder of 3000 people? Bush Sat as NYC Burned On September 11th 2001, President Bush was reading to a group of children in an elementary school when a Secret Service agent whispered something along the lines of "The Nation is under attack" into his ear. What did he do? He continued to stare at the children's book while they read aloud for the next seven minutes. He was then kept in the school building for an additional twenty to thirty minutes before being moved to a secure location. In that time, 300 New York City firefighters and police officers lost their lives while attempting to rescue as many people as they could from the burning, falling towers. It was NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on the scene and Governor George Pataki. Not George Bush. As far as I remember, Dick Cheney was oved to a secret undergound location, and George Bush's family and he were too. They were nowhere in sight. Where was he when the NYPD, FDNY, PAPD, EMT's and emergency workers and even those from surrounding cities and states had already arrived at Ground Zero? It was three days before President Bush finally arrived. CNN reported on September 14, 2001, "President Bush arrived on the southern tip of Manhattan on Friday afternoon to see for himself the almost unimaginable devastation meted out upon New York's financial district, when two 767 jetliners slammed into the World Trade Center's landmark twin towers during Tuesday's morning rush." Osama bin Laden been caught yet? Republicans continue to bring up Saddam's capture and the "liberation" of Iraq, even though Iraq's ties to terrorists and 9/11 are insignificant. The effort to find Osama Bin Laden, if there still is one, has not had the support needed by this administration. If they want to run on 9/11 they should at least show commitment to the platform. More so, fifteen of the nineteen hijackers who took over planes used on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia, yet we do nothing to retaliate against that country. Why? If instead Iraqis had attacked the US would Bush have waited one moment to retaliate? The 9/11 Commission's Report Though Bush commits himself to the 9/11 platform, he has not committed to those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The Families of 911 Victims still have not seen any resignations from the Bush Administration. In his testimony to the Public Commission on 9/11, Terrorism Czar Dick Clarke took responsibility for failing to protect America but then he was the first to point out that National Defence Advisor to the President, Condoleeza Rice, had been uninterested in any of his suggestions about al-Qaeda operations until Sept. 11, 2001 and that she had told him to find a new hobby. How about firing Rice? In fact, the Bush Administration had engaged the al-Qaeda in a battle of the egos in the Summer of 2001 (See Juryfury.com). Why? Surely they should have taken some pre-cautions to fight back if attacked. Death and Carnage -- constants of US Foreign Policy Since Bush took office 4000 Americans have died -- 3000 or so on September 11, 2001, and a 1000 or so in Iraq and Afghanistan. Over 7000 American soldiers lie in Veterans Hospitals all over the US with no limbs. Over 11,000 Iraqis are dead. God knows how many in Afghanistan too. Afghanistan also has a death toll prior to September 11, 2001 -- from the glory years of the Cold War. It might be as high as 400,000, mostly women and children. Clearly, not much has changed in American Foreign Policy to rule out the fact that we might be stuck with another monster for a President for another four years. But should we not at least try?
