Sex and Religion

Not for the Pious?
by Sophia Barkat

Why is sex treated as a sin in many religions?

Here's more news about how the Catholic priests are unable to abstain:

It really begs the question if God would think you are a better person for abstaining from sex.

Of course one can go to the heart of the religions -- Islam, Christianity and Judaism -- and find that "sex" and sexual identity is a curse upon humans -- due to Eve and Adam's go at the apple.<

And yet, without sex there has been no life up until recently. It's like saying without sex you wouldn't have any life let alone artificial methods of reproduction.

Animals have sex, plants do in their own way if you consider plants have different genders, and some cellular organisms simply undergo asexual reproduction. You have heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, and the list goes on.

Clearly, human beings and such enjoy sex.

Why then should it be a sin?

Does sex pollute the minds of people that it makes them completely evil?

One can say that by putting a "cap on sex" so to speak, religions would want more marriages to survive. And since marriage is what creates a healthy environment for children and in effect society, we should keep the fear alive.

But marriages don't raise healthy kids. Love does. And love and loyalty in marriage cannot be guaranteed by religion imposed fear if people have lust in their hearts.

Truly, sex cannot be an evil. In fact, people cannot be evil. What is evil is the intent to drive people into madness by trying to make them abstain.

I wonder how people abstain from sex once they have tried it. I also wonder how people cannot be better at it, but that's an altogether different topic.

But it's truly amazing that some people may force others not to have any. And it's not only inhuman but also criminal.
