The Money Trail The Foundation in the News by Sophia Barkat If you thought the Church was not a vehicle of politics look at the news: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030420/ap_on_go_co/rent= ing_from_religion_5 Some Christian group called the "Foundation" and "fellowship" is paying for a million dollar house so that 6 Republicans can pay low boarding to stay in Capitol Hill : The six lawmakers - Reps. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn.; Bart Stupak, D-Mich.; Jim DeMint, R-S.C.; Mike Doyle, D-Pa.; and Sens. John Ensign, R-Nev. and Sam Brownback, R-Kan. --- live in private rooms upstairs. by Jack Curtis Re: Sophia's post - The Foundation in the News t occurred to me awhile back that some sort of unifying mythology might be necessary to a well functioning Democracy, so maybe the separation of Church & State isn't such a hot idea, serving as an obstacle to finally delivering on the promise of Democracy in America, rather than as a stepping-stone. by Trevor Batten Re: Jack's post - The Foundation in the News I guess it all depends on how great is the need for a "unifying mythology" is -and how seriously it is taken. I rather suspect that the idea of one dog might function in a socially different way within a culture naturally tending to be fractious, argumentative and individualistic -than it might in a culture which considers itself unified under some (other) form of universal law (such as the myth of the Roman Empire). Presumably, the need to separate church and state was also the result of feelings of public unease which resulted from the excesses of an oppressive church -although it does perhaps also reflect the schizophrenia inherent in western "humanist" culture - where many people believed in the supremacy of logic over dogma while at the same time remaining Christian. Incidentally, the rigid division between state and church is perhaps more a characteristic of Protestant, bourgeois, Northern Europe than of Europe as a whole. The relationship between church and state seems much more interwoven in Catholic, Southern Europe (Spain and Ireland, particularly - with Italy Mussolini) being a possible exception). I've no idea how church and state relate in Eastern (Orthodox) Europe. Historically, the Pope and the Germanic emperor were in conflict over who should rule supreme -and this conflict went on for many years. What's Bad for Business -- Anti-Islamic Remarks & the Clergy Backfire by Sophia Barkat Anti-Islamic remarks seen as bad for Missionary Work, the Christian Evangelists have lashed out against the likes of Pat Robertson. Here's the link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030508/ap_on_re_us/ evangelicals_muslims_11 Christian Evangelists have criticized their own for making anti-Islamic remarks. |
