Russia & Neighbors
Beslan: Western Hypocrisy exposed by Ajay Kamalakaran In Beslan, Russia faced its most brutal terrorist attack. Over 400 innocent children, parents and teachers were murdered by terrorists sympathetic to the Chechen cause. While most world leaders condemned the terrorist attacks, the condemnations came with a message to Russia to hold a dialogue with Chechen separatists. Russia has been attacked by international terrorists since the break up of the USSR. Many political analysts argue that Russia should give Chechnya freedom claiming that Belarus and Ukraine, which had far greater cultural affinity with Russia, were allowed to become independent nations. This argument doesn’t hold water as several impartial referendums have shown that the Chechen people consider themselves Russians and want to stay with Russia. Besides, such a measure would only give rise to violent secessionist movements in Ingushetia, Dagestan and other autonomous Russian republics. Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who was the darling of the West, has been demonised following his reaction to reports in the western media about how Russia should reach out to Chechen separatists. The President rightfully asked, "Why don't you meet Osama bin Laden, invite him to Brussels or to the White House and engage in talks, ask him what he wants and give it to him so he leaves you in peace? You find it possible to set some limitations in your dealings with these b******s, so why should we talk to people who are child-killers?" The world supposedly changed on September 11, 2001, when the World Trade Centre in New York was reduced to rubble and over three thousand people perished. While, most of those who died in that attack were Americans, the whole world stood by America and there was universal outrage and gloom over the terrorist attack. Citizens of countries which were affected by terrorism started to believe that the United States would play a leadership role in eradicating the global terrorist menace. Three years later and several terrorist attacks later, we can come to the conclusion that the deaths of certain people matter far less than the death of others. There has been no outrage over the death of Iraqis since America’s illegal invasion and occupation of the country. While, the number of dead American soldiers has been counted, no one knows how many Iraqis have died since March 2003. Getting back to Russia and Beslan, it seems that the torture, rape, starvation, denial of water to, and shooting in the back of small children do not matter so long as the targets are not Westerners. In a nutshell, the reactions by the Western media say that the Chechen problem is not a global problem and the Chechens are fighting injustices committed by the Soviet Union and Russia. The esteemed western press also says that Russian security forces are brutal and incompetent. The western logic is completely flawed. If the attacks in Beslan were a local issue, how was the attack on the WTC a global one? The attacks were carried out by Saudis against the United States as these so called Jihadis wanted the Americans out of their sacred Saudi soil. So this is an issue between two countries and not global. If Beslan wasn’t global then 9-11 and the US war against Iraq weren’t global issues either. It comes down to this, when Russians get killed it is a local issue and when Americans die, it is global. One can easily make the arguments that the US bombings of Libya, American support of the Israeli oppression of Palestinians and America’s carpet bombing of select Arab targets could justify 9-11. If Russian oppression justifies attacks like Beslan, then why doesn’t American aggression justify 9-11? So wouldn’t Iraqis out for revenge be justified in committing terrorist attacks in the US, based on American-enforced casualties in Iraq? As for the incompetence of the Russian security forces, what choice did they have in the action that they took? The terrorists were starving and dehydrating children and shooting fleeing children in the back. Not to mention raping older boys and girls. They had wired up the school with explosives. What did Saudi Arabia, the "ally" in America’s War on Terror do when Iranian militants seized Holy Sites in their kingdom in 1987? Or let’s get closer to the United States. How did the FBI handle the David Koresh, Waco cult affair? Tanks were used to attack the compound and men, women and children alike were killed. It is western hypocrisy that has made countries like Russia develop an "us against the world" mentality. The world as a whole needs to condemn acts of violence, regardless of the cause of the terrorists. Universal condemnation of killing of innocent civilians, whether they are Americans, Europeans, Russians, Africans or Asians, is the first step in global rapprochement.
