Public Nuisance Cell Phones and Car Accidents by Sophia Barkat I am hoping the NTSB bans hand-held cell-phones for all drivers not just inexperienced ones. Crossing the street at crossing with no lights is as dangerous as driving in roads with no lights because of one more menace on the road. Not just drunk or inexperienced drivers, it's Moms, Kids, Fathers, everyone talking on their cell-phones while driving. Here's NTSB's proposed ban, which so far is in effect only in New Jersey: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030603/ap_on_go_ot/drivers_cell_phones_2 Some 6% of all road accidents are due to cell-phone use while driving. And that's a couple of thousands people too many. I know MoveOn.org pushes for this kind of legislation by having people write to their State legislators. I think we should start doing this too. Starting from next issue we should have people sign up for letter-writing campaigns. It has worked a lot -- the MoveOn.org campaigns -- and we should follow their example. So, please propose any issue you feel deserves attention and let's get this place rolling. by Craig Johnson re: Sophia's post Is that all 6% of all accidents?? I really thought it would be higher. I am against the cell phone ban personally, seeing as you can have hands free service. The big question is are the police and emergency services probably don't want the ban for all the assistance they have received over the years. I guess the big question is does the emergency potential outweigh the idiots? If you recall the DC sniper was caught by a trucker at rest stop with a cell-phone. You certainly provoked an interesting topic there! by Sophia Barkat re: Craig's post According to the link I read today: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030603/ap_on_go_ot/drivers_cell_phones_4 6% is the rate. I am quite sure the risk is much higher in some places. In Flagstaff, AZ for ex. there is one crossing at which it's impossible to walk across the street without cars coming at you from both sides. There are no lights, and there's always people driving and talking on their cell-phones. Sometimes I feel like the frog in "Frogger" when I am trying to cross the street there. I didn't know about hand-free services. You're right about cell-phones being useful during emergencies, but people have become too lax about things, and a real danger to others. |
