FORE! WOMEN Golf Tournament to Support the Women of Afghanistan -- Professional Golfer Suzy Whaley to Serve as Tournament Chair courteousy Peter Houstle, UNIFEM/USA WASHINGTON - The first annual Fore! Women Golf Tournament to raise funds for the development of Women's Centers in Afghanistan will be held on Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Belmont Country Club in Ashburn, Virginia. LPGA pro Suzy Whaley has signed on as Chair of the event. Suzy Whaley became the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event since Babe Zaharias in 1945 when she qualified for the PGA Tour's Greater Hartford Open (GHO) in July 2003. "Participating in the Greater Hartford Open enabled me to do something that will empower women in the golf world," said Whaley. "I am honored to also be involved with a tournament whose mission is to help empower women in Afghanistan. Through our efforts, we can make a difference." Whaley is joined by a tournament Advisory Council including Advisory Council Chair, Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Director, UNIFEM and Advisory Council Members: Maureen Bunyan, News Anchor WJLA ABC 7; Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, Founder and President of the National Museum of Women in the Arts; Judith Mueller, President, The Advisory Network; Karen Mulhauser, President, Mulhauser and Associates - Consulting Women; Terry Neese, President, Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP); and Meredith Wagner, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs, Lifetime Television for Women. The golf tournament - the first of its kind - is being organized by the United States Committee for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM/USA); the Washington, DC Metro Chapter of the Executive Women's Golf Association (EWGA-DC); and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO NOVA); in partnership with the National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO). "This tournament will provide golfers in the Washington, DC area with the opportunity to support UNIFEM's efforts in Afghanistan while doing something they love," said Sheryl J. Swed, President of UNIFEM/USA. "We thank our major sponsors, the UN Foundation, Bearing Point, and Ferris, Baker Watts, Inc. for their vision and support, and our friends: Counterpart International, the Calvert Group, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Southwest Airlines and Don Beyer Volvo." Created in 1976, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) is working in over 100 countries to provide financial support and technical assistance to innovative programs and strategies that promote women's human rights, political participation and economic security. UNIFEM is working in Afghanistan with the Afghan Ministry of Women's Affairs to establish Women's Centers, which will offer a range of services focused on literacy, maternal health and legal counseling, as well as training in entrepreneurship, computer literacy, English language, and other vocational skills.
